MDF is an excellent substrate material. It does not contain the knots or rings you get in natural woods, but at the same time it retains a traditional look. Its other advantages include the fact that it is highly durable, meaning your creations will last as long as you want them to.

Maple wood look and is available on 12mm MDF base
Natural Wood is a MDF base that has a maple grain laminate giving a natural wood look and feel. This makes it ideal for photos with a difference.
These surfaces are becoming ever more popular as people seek out a natural look and feel in a substrate. The panels are finished with a maple veneer with a special coating that reduces yellowing of the wood – and offers extra protection from UV light.

Special substrate available in 2mm can be glued or bonded to MDF
ChromaLuxe Phenolic is a thin, impact resistant composite material that can be applied to other materials to provide a smooth face with durable gloss finish.
This could the answer for you if you have a particularly large area to cover. When you need the surface of a table or a counter protected, phenolic can be applied to other materials to produce a composite that is thin but at the same time impervious to hard knocks.
